About the role : Internal Job Title: Principal Scientist I Job Location: Cambridge, MA onsite About the Role: Disease Area X, a department within the Biomedical Research (BR) group of Novartis, focuses on diseases of critical human organs, including kidney, lung, and liver. We are seeking a scientist to join our interdisciplinary pharmacology team (Discovery and Translational Pharmacology) in support of our efforts to progress novel medicines toward the clinic, with an emphasis on renal diseases. In this role, you will work together with direct reports and drug discovery teams to help lead in the conception, execution, and interpretation of in vivo and ex vivo studies that support target validation and drug candidate progression. Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to: • Significant contributor or leader of drug discovery project teams who is able to conceive and design in vivo experiments with rodents in support of a portfolio of drug discovery programs. Critical design elements include dosing novel therapeutics; pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic analyses; in-life activities including blood and urine collection, ultrasound, telemetry, and similar non-lethal readouts; and harvesting of tissues for analysis of efficacy using molecular biology, cell biology, and histology assessments. • Lead from the bench in the execution, interpretation, and extracting of next step recommendations for in vivo and ex vivo experiments, primarily of kidney disease, but will likely include work in other therapeutic areas. • Crisp and compelling communication of project/team strategy, scientific vision, and data to key partners. • Enabling partnerships with individuals across Biomedical Research Disease Areas and platform functions. • Leading and/or influencing multi-disciplinary project team(s) to decision landmarks. • Managing, training, and developing a team of research scientists in the pharmacology discipline.

Essential Requirements:

• Ph.D or MD/Ph.D or equivalent training.
• At least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in industry or equivalent.
• Pharmacology expertise in renal biology (preferred) and/or general drug discovery.
• Hands-on experience in performing complex pre-clinical animal model studies, including designing and executing fit-for-purpose drug discovery flow charts and enabling deep mechanistic and pharmacological characterization of lead candidates.
• Team oriented and collaborative work ethic.
• Proven ability to coach and empower others including development of early career scientists.
• Fluency and excellent communication skills in English.

Desirable Characteristics:

• Experience in complex cellular models and/or ex vivo systems.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $112,800 to $169,200/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/24 through 12/31/24, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
