Join Novartis as a Renal Bioengineer and contribute to groundbreaking translational research in renal health. As a Principal Scientist II at our Cambridge, USA campus, you’ll be at the forefront of innovation, leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform patient care in nephrology. Be part of a team where your expertise in bioengineering shapes the future of renal medicine.

About the Role

Join Novartis as a Renal Bioengineer and contribute to groundbreaking translational research in renal health. As a Principal Scientist II at our Cambridge, USA campus, you’ll be at the forefront of innovation, leveraging cutting-edge technology to transform patient care in nephrology. Be part of a team where your expertise in bioengineering shapes the future of renal medicine.

The Bioengineer will bring key professional experiences to Translational Research and Data Sciences in Disease Area Exploratory to contribute to drug discovery and development for renal diseases. This role involves fostering collaboration and alignment in a matrix environment to enable the science, people, and strategy. The successful candidate will work at the cutting edge to advance the discovery and understanding of transformative medicines and biomarkers for patients with podocytopathies and polycystic kidney diseases.

In this role, you will develop, execute, and deliver on complex micro physiological ex vivo models (precision cut region-specific kidney slices) to interrogate the effects of variable micro-environments on key renal-resident regional cells (glomerular, tubular).

Key Responsibilities :

  • Lead the development of translationally relevant (human and murine) scalable bioreactor-based complex tissue models (e.g., precision cut region specific kidney slices) including smart biomaterials and microfluidics to monitor tissue viability and cell function.

  • Interrogate the mechanobiology and molecular mechanisms underlying the effect of biophysical stimuli (e.g. shear stress, cyclic stretch, extracellular matrix topography/stiffness).

  • Evaluate and apply these complex models for suitability and application in target and pathway identification, validation, modulation, and therapeutic intervention.

  • Integrate insights from phenotypic models with high throughput omics profiling, disease biology, molecular and cellular characterization of disease, to enable drug hunting and biomarker discovery.

  • Achieve high scientific, operational, and cultural standards, in alignment with biology and translational science experts within the department and in the matrix community.

  • Champion alliances with academic clinical centers and/or contract research organizations, to guide the implementation of new technologies, platforms, and acquisition of disease-relevant human tissues.

Essential Requirements:

• Ph.D. with 6 years of related proven ability in industry with a track record of strong achievement, or equivalent experience.

• Champion a culture of innovative thinking, scientific excellence, and strategic execution, delivering high performance with a tactical attitude and a culture of trust (inspired, curious, unbossed).

• Collaborating across boundaries, strong networking and communication skills.

• Passionate about achieving goals while adhering to Novartis standards in quality, ethics, health and safety, environmental sustainability, and information security.

Desirable Requirements

• A resilience for prioritizing the unmet medical needs of patients.
