Summary

The Therapeutic Area (TA) Head, managing a team of six, will lead, manage and develop the overall performance of the therapeutic area's current and future product portfolio, with oversight of the execution of pre-launch and launch plans across all line functions (Access, Commercial/Medical). Furthermore, the TA Head will collaborate with country/cluster teams to help them drive brand performance and develop operational strategy for the organization, and guide and support the implementation of innovative commercial models. The position holder will also be responsible for overseeing implementation of mar-ket access and policy strategies to ensure the successful launch and growth of the TA pipeline portfolio across the region, in alignment with global strategies. The purpose of this role will be to provide oversight and support to the local team to ensure successful implementation of triple win go to market strategies for the TA across the region.

About the Role

The TA Head is responsible for delivering the P&L for our strategically important assets, and achieves growth according to the following mandate:
Financial performance:

  • To be accountable for delivering on-target P&L performance for the defined TA’s
  • To create performance mindset and drive top & bottom-line performance for the TA’s

Commercial and Digital Strategy Development:

  • Develop growth strategies for our key therapy areas that push the envelope, driving up standards in healthcare and creating competitive advantages where our brands thrive
  • To develop the organization into an agile, customer-led, solution-driven mindset that meets the evolving needs of the business, our customers, and patients.
  • Develop and deliver brand and TA strategic and operational plans
  • Develop and maintain the highest standards of marketing and selling excellent
  • Plan and organize commercial and digital engagement strategies and programs aligned with global and APMA direction.
  • To define and enable customer-centric commercial strategies & go to market models that drive long term growth for the TA portfolio
  • Review current market practices to prepare the business for future launches in line with global and regional strategy
  • Balance investment in public and private sector growth opportunities to build our business for today and tomorrow

People Management:

  • Develop team, creating successors and senior leaders of the future
  • Deepen capability for new ways of working, including customer experience design, healthcare solutions, insights and analytics, business agility, OCE in line with regional priorities and local needs
  • Coach, manage, lead the team, matrix leadership for the function. Support enterprise talent management
  • Maintain and role model the highest levels of integrity and good judgement at all times

Major accountabilities:

  • Deliver the P&L and growth targets for the defined TA’s in portfolio
  • Motivate and direct the team around the most important jobs to be done. Focusing the team by removing low value / non-essential tasks that do not significantly contribute to the Big Bold Objectives
  • Lead the development and execution of the strategic plan for the TA and brands.
  • Lead the planning and organizing of commercial and digital strategies and programs
  • Collaborate with BE&E to develop new digital channels and media
  • Leads Marketing & Sales organization, foster a mindset of collaboration, innovation, experimentation, and performance for the relevant TA’s across the country. Builds capability.
  • Responsible for developing clear and well communicated country level x-functional product strategies and tactical plans with defined country level KPIs in line with global brand strategies.
  • Serve as a link between local and regional / global TA teams and assist with the roll-out of key Global and/or Regional initiatives
  • Contribute towards the preparation for and execution of new launches via Launch Readiness Review process and launch tracking at country level.
  • Contribute to optimal resource allocation for the TA brands via active participation in budget process, resource allocation and strategy planning and actively providing feedback. Balance TA strategies in light of overall NVS growth priorities
  • Ensure optimal function of direct and indirect reports (marketing and sales teams) and drive the produc-tivity and performance of sales forces. Operational responsibility for sales and marketing execution
  • Enable and leverage data-based performance analytics for monitoring and decision making
  • Assist with the introduction and evolution of New Commercial Models for the TA’s in South Africa including implementation of global/ regional initiatives to future proof the organization
  • Contribute to the launch planning and execution of upcoming key launches by ensuring seamless cross-functional collaboration
  • Partner cross-functionally to support in the development of agile, customer-led digital and customer solutions which meets the evolving needs of the business, our customers and patients.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally to develop robust segmentation and targeting frameworks for increased efficiency and effectiveness of our customer engagement activities. Ensure appropriate identification, mapping, and engagement of medical experts in the SA market
  • Successfully lead teams for the TA’s, build a high performing culture, foster innovation, and manage all people-management related processes. Identify and build key capabilities, talent pipeline and ensure development of people.
  • Transform and personalize HCP engagement through digitalization and impact measurement for the TA portfolio
  • Oversee and develop relations with key opinion leaders, affiliates and partnerships
  • Support the continuous improvement of marketing and sales capabilities within the TAs, participate in recruiting of senior managers within the function and support the development of talent to transform our engagement model to become future fit.
  • Facilitates best practice sharing and drives Innovation and implementation of Best Practices for the country
  • Drive the spirit of “ONE Team” for the TA function by supporting a team approach to focus on our patients, payers and customers as our top priorities.
  • Establish One-Novartis mindset within the TAs and ensure optimal resource allocation
  • Represents the country in sharing perspectives in relevant local, regional and global forums
  • Champion the highest level of ethics and integrity at all times

Minimum Requirements:
Education:

  • Postgraduate degree in sciences, business administration, health policy, health economic or other relevant qualification preferred
  • Desirable: MBA or equivalent.

Work Experience:

  • Proven track-record of P&L responsibility
  • Deep commercial experience with clear understanding of therapeutic areas
  • Extensive (> 12) years experience in senior positions within the pharmaceutical industry
  • Strong strategic and operational background with successful product launch experience at local, regional and/or global level
  • Strong business acumen, analytical skillset, and executive presence
  • Demonstrated ability to be creative / think “outside-the-box”
  • Strong organizational and project management skills with demonstrated ability to successfully drive projects to completion
  • Strong financial capabilities.
  • Proven sales and marketing management ability
  • Demonstrated strategic acumen and ability to analyze com-plex business topics and issues
  • In depth knowledge of customer/marketplace, key dynamics, and current knowledge of key competitors and their likely strategies
  • Extremely well-developed understanding of regulatory and market environments in South Africa
  • Strong relationships with KOLs in regulatory bodies, customers
  • Proven understanding of product launch and product commercialization processes
  • Comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of the legal and ethical framework and procedural guidelines applicable to the promotion and authorisation of medicinal products in South Africa
  • Sound leadership experience, and proven ability to manage, team with, and motivate associates of widely varying back-grounds across a dispersed and matrixed organization
  • Proven ability and experience of risk management
  • Strong results orientation with ability to drive execution for business impact
  • Proven leadership experience to interact comprehensively and effectively within the business locally and across regions and cultures
